Not every photographer starts with a camera.
For Pui Yee, photography was never part of the original plan. She was running a pet treats business, spending most of her days surrounded by dogs and cats, creating products for pet owners who wanted the best for their companions.
As her business grew, she began collaborating with a pet photographer to create promotional images. However, after working together for some time, she realized the photographs were no longer improving. The style remained the same, the quality plateaued, and there was little room for creative growth.
Instead of accepting the limitation, she decided to learn the craft herself.
By the time she approached me, Pui Yee already had a basic understanding of photography. She knew how to operate her camera, had experimented with studio lighting, and understood the importance of presentation. What she lacked was a structured workflow and a deeper understanding of why certain images work while others do not.

Over the course of three intensive days, we focused on three key areas:
Lens Selection
Different focal lengths create completely different impressions of an animal. We explored how wider lenses can exaggerate features, while longer focal lengths help maintain natural proportions and create a more refined commercial look.
Lighting Techniques
Pet photography is challenging because subjects rarely stay still. We discussed light placement, shadow control, catchlights, and how to create soft yet dimensional illumination that enhances fur texture and expression.
Post-processing Workflow
Editing was another major breakthrough. Learning how to balance colors, maintain natural fur details, and create a consistent visual identity helped elevate the images significantly.
The transformation was immediate.

Within just three days, Pui Yee was producing images with stronger visual impact, cleaner execution, and a much more professional presentation. More importantly, she no longer needed to depend on another photographer to represent her brand.
She had become the photographer behind it.

Watching students gain confidence and discover their own visual language is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Technical skills can be learned, but the willingness to improve and invest in oneself is what truly makes the difference.
Today, Pui Yee is not only creating better content for her pet business, but also expanding into pet portrait photography under Yee Studio, capturing memorable moments for fellow pet lovers.
